What could be better than returning from a trip with a self-made souvenir, rather than one that you have bought.
Mayfez’s wood painting workshop is an immersion in Moroccan culture and craftsmanship.

You’re no longer a spectator of your trip, but a player in it.

A workshop that will appeal to all creative explorers, who like to be hands-on.

The art of painted wood, “Zouak”, is a very important craft in Moroccan culture. It dates back to the time of the Merinids, in the 12th century. With time, it has become one of the jewels in the crown of Moroccan craftsmanship.

The techniques used, have been passed down from generation to generation, creating an exceptional artistic tradition.
“Zouak” is a technique for painting on wood, which may, or not, involve engraving and carving decorative motifs on the wood before painting.
It was originally used to decorate mosques. Therefore, the patterns and colours used, are often inspired by nature and reflect the beauty of God’s creation.

As a result, “zouak” is seen as a link between the spiritual and the material.

Yet, nowadays, Zouak is used for a wide variety of decorative purposes. In fact, it is often used for doors, windows, screens, walls and ceilings, as well as decorative items such as furniture, picture frames, jewellery boxes, etc.

The workshop takes place in our Salon Josephine, on the roof top, or in the patio of the Riad, depending on the participants feelings and weather permitting.

On a 20cm slab of wood, you will create your own “Zouak” work, ready to hang when you return home from your trip.
Our “Zouak” artist will guide you through the process of creating and designing your work.

We recommend that you do not schedule this workshop the day before your departure, to allow your work to dry properly.

Duration: 2 hours or more depending on the participants involvement.
Private sessions or group of 4 people maximum per workshop.
