While visiting the spiritual capital of Morocco, what would make more sense than a hands-on immersion into Moroccan spirituality?
You’ll get home not just dazzled by the images you’ve seen during your trip in Morocco, but with a peaceful mind, and a self-made souvenir to show your loved-ones.

You are no longer a spectator of your trip, you become an actor.

Mayfez’ Calligraphy Workshop, invites visitors on an introspective and creative journey, through the words and letters that will illuminate your stay for a few hours.
You will learn that calligraphers need to know how to breathe and keep their breath while writing, because it’s to the rhythm of their breathing that their hand writes and traces the letters.
This close relationship between writing and breathing plunges the calligrapher into a timeless world of inner silence, where the mind is in perfect harmony with the gesture of the hand.

This workshop will appeal to all creative travellers in search of mindfulness and a new balance.

Writing is the gesture of transcribing text by drawing the words.
Calligraphy, on the other hand, aims to draw the meanings of words and represent their spirit. This slight difference is what distinguishes the calligraphy artist from the ordinary writer.
Calligraphy is therefore the art of writing, and more precisely, the art of beautiful writing.

It involves creating letters, words and phrases that are both legible and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. To achieve this, calligraphers must master not only the shape of the letters, but also the space around them.
In this way, the painting becomes a space where every detail counts, and where negative space plays just as important a role as positive space. In this way, the void is an essential element of the composition, giving rhythm, balance and life to the whole. Without it, the letters would simply be empty forms, devoid of any emotion or beauty.

The workshop takes place in our Salon Josephine, on the roof top or in the patio of the Riad, depending on the participants feelings and weather permitting.
The workshop begins with a historical introduction to calligraphy: the art, its variations, its role and evolution over time.
Participants are then invited to try their hand at the art, using pen and ink on paper.

Our calligraphy artist ends the session with a demonstration.
Each participant will be given a paper on which the artist has calligraphed the participant’s name.

Duration: 2 hours or more depending on the participants involvement
Private sessions or group sessions of 4 people maximum per workshop.
